Questioner: Yousuf Sani`i (Prosecutor General)
[3/1/2592 dated 9/2/1364 AHS His Holiness Ayatullah al-`Uzma Imam Khomeini (May his sublime presence endure over the heads of Muslims). After greeting, you are kindly requested to provide written answer to the following question:
Does the criminal have to pay the blood money the amount of dinar «1» set in many cases in injuries or it is not necessary to pay in dinar as in the case of camel about which you pronounced the verdict that it is not essential, «2» with the proportion of the amount of dinar equivalent sum will be collected in blood money?

It is not essential and one can pay the equivalent amount.

«۱»- Gold coin prevalent in ancient times. «۲»- In cases when one who has committed a crime is subject to pay blood money in accordance with codes of fiqh (jurisprudence), camel has been prescribed as blood money, but Imam Khomeini has pronounced the fatwa (religious decree) that it is not essential to pay camel for blood money and that payment of equivalent amount in proportion to the day's rate is sufficient.
